Bad News at Christmas

The Siberian Tiger is a very rare species. So when two cubs are found frozen to death in a freezer at a zoo in China.

The zoo which is in the south-west has been deeply saddened by the discovery, especially as there are only 400 of the creatures left in the wild.

Tiger body parts are treasured as medicines in China and on Thursday an adult female of the same species received the same fate.

Buying and selling tigers was banned in China in 1993, so these deaths could be a sign that the trade in body parts of these rare animals may be on the rise.

This is really sad news. Especially as it's Christmas. I hope the trade stops and that there are no more incidents like these two.

Prince Harrier

On Wednesday, Prince Harry was questioned about the death of two hen harriers. The birds are very rare and if you kill one you will either be given a £5000 fine or get sent to jail for six months.

He was believed to be in the same area as the creatures when they were shot. The prince stated that he knows nothing about the deaths.

It is saddening to hear of the deaths. No-one knows who actually murdered them except from anyone who was with the person who committed it at that time or the person who committed it themself.

The Failing Wildlife of Africa

Ecologists are concerned about the state of the Nation Parks in Africa. Lots of species of large mammals are declining.

Tim Caro and Paul Scholte wrote, "For years, wildlife managers and biologists in Africa have known that large mammals were disappearing outside reserves.

"But now a raft of studies are showing that we have moved beyond this to the next step - we are losing species from many of Africa's national parks.

"What the new data show is even relatively well-organised protected areas cannot be relied on as long-lasting conservation tools."

A lot of this is down to poaching.

Ndeze (above) is an orphaned Mountain Gorilla. The parents were killed in the Virunga National Park in D.R. Congo. Park Rangers are doing extra patrols around the park to stop things like this happening again.

Also, a group of 12 Gorillas attacked by gunmen have been declared dead.

Illegal Ivory

Ivory is one of the many illegal things holidaymakers are bringing back from abroad. Other things are coral and Chinese medicines. Study shows that last year 163,000 illegal wildlife goods, many from endangered species, were seized. W.W.F. spokeswoman Heather Sohl said, "Many tourists could be unwittingly helping to push some of the world's most endangered species to the brink of extinction - all for the sake of an exotic souvenir. Our message is if in doubt don't buy."

Poisoned Eagles

The female of the only breeding Golden Eagle pair in the Borders part of Scotland has been killed. It was shot with poison because it hunts Grouse, which are cruelly killed for sport. I mean, the Eagle's gotta eat. The people shoot them for fun!

The dead bird was about nine or ten years old, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Scotland will give £1000 to whoever finds the killer. Even though there are 420 breeding pairs in other pars of Scotland, it is still upsetting, and we wonder how long it will be before they suffer the same fate.

Mountain Murders

Poachers have been hunting the endangered Mountain Gorilla. Many have been found dead in central Africa, where they live. This is very upsetting. I will inform you on this ongoing evil.
